Choosing the Right Loft Bed

A loft bed does more than raise the sleeping position. By making use of the space underneath the bed, it can create additional room for storage, play or study without requiring the same floor space as separate pieces of furniture.

Our loft bed range has developed around these different needs. Rather than choosing by height alone, it can be helpful to first decide what you want the space underneath the bed to do.

Low Loft Beds with Desks and Storage

Our Low Spacesaver Loft Beds are designed to combine sleeping, storage and activity or study space while keeping the upper bed considerably lower than a conventional high loft.

These designs incorporate a movable pull-out desk that can be used for drawing, activities or homework and moved back underneath when more floor space is wanted. Depending on the model, storage is provided through open shelving or enclosed cupboards, with compact front-ladder and Easy Climb Steps configurations available.

Sometimes described as mid-sleeper or cabin-style beds, these lower loft designs are a practical option when you want a loft bed with a desk and storage without the height or permanent workspace of a full-height loft.

Cubby House Loft Beds for Play and Relaxing

Our Cubby House Loft Beds use the space underneath in a completely different way. The intermediate-height sleeping position creates an open area that can become a child's own space for play, reading, beanbags, relaxing or imaginative play.

Choose from an integrated bookshelf with end ladder, Easy Climb Steps with storage drawers, or a compact front-ladder design with shelving at both ends underneath.

These loft beds are less about creating a formal workspace and more about giving children useful extra space of their own within the bedroom, while still incorporating practical storage for books, toys and other belongings.

High Loft Beds with Study Desks

For bedrooms where a more substantial homework or study area is the priority, our High Loft Beds provide greater usable workspace underneath.

Our end-ladder design combines an integrated bookshelf with an optional separate two-drawer desk. Because the desk is independent of the bed, it can be positioned in different locations underneath or left out completely if you simply want a high loft bed with open space below.

Our Front Ladder model takes a different approach, with a two-drawer desk integrated into the structure of the bed. The desk sits behind the ladder and the more open design allows additional light into the workspace.

This gives you a choice between the flexibility of a separate movable desk and a more compact integrated study arrangement.

Very Low Loft Beds with an Optional Lower Bed

Our two very low loft designs offer another flexible approach. Each can be ordered as a Low Height Loft Bed on its own, providing useful space underneath despite the relatively low upper sleeping position.

Alternatively, an optional full-size pull-out lower bed can be added to create sleeping space for two children. The lower bed pulls out from the end at a right angle to the upper bed and runs on casters, allowing it to be moved further into the room for sleeping or pushed further underneath when more floor space is wanted.

Choose between a Compact Built-In Ladder or Easy Climb Steps with storage drawers. Because these designs can also provide two lower sleeping positions, you can find them in our Low Height Bunk Beds range as well.

Loft Beds with Desks – Which Type?

If a desk is important, there are several different approaches within our range.

Our Low Spacesaver Loft Beds use movable pull-out desks combined with storage. They provide space for activities and homework while keeping the overall bed relatively low. The desk can be pulled out when needed and moved back underneath to free up floor space.

Our High Loft Beds create a larger dedicated workspace underneath. Depending on the model, the desk can either be a separate movable piece or fully integrated into the structure of the bed.

When comparing loft beds with desks, consider how much workspace you need, whether you want the desk to move or remain permanently in position, and how much storage you would like around it.

Standard Single or King Single Loft Beds?

All of our loft beds are available for either a Standard Single or King Single mattress.

A Standard Single helps keep the overall dimensions more compact, while a King Single provides additional width and length. Because the bed is elevated and the space underneath remains useful, choosing a King Single loft bed can provide a larger sleeping surface without losing all of the floor area occupied by a conventional bed.

The exact dimensions and available configurations vary between designs, so check the options and specifications on each individual product page when planning your room.

High Loft Beds or Low Loft Beds?

The best height depends largely on how you want to use the space underneath.

A low loft is useful when you want to combine a lower overall bed height with storage, a pull-out desk or flexible space underneath. Our Cubby House designs sit between our lowest and highest lofts, providing enough space underneath for play, reading and relaxing.

A high loft provides considerably more clearance underneath, making it better suited to a substantial desk and dedicated study or workspace.

Looking at the purpose of the space below the bed first can make it much easier to choose between the different loft designs in our range.

Made to Order in Melbourne

Our loft beds are designed and made to order in Melbourne, rather than supplied as fixed, mass-produced configurations.

Depending on the design, you can choose options including Standard Single or King Single sizing, colour combinations, left- or right-hand arrangements, ladder or Easy Climb Steps, different storage layouts and desk configurations. The Options and Styles counts shown with each product provide a quick indication of the choices available.

Making our loft beds to order also gives us greater flexibility when a standard configuration does not quite suit your room. We have produced special variations in the past, including different access arrangements and sizes, so if you have an unusual bedroom layout or a particular requirement, contact us to discuss what may be possible.
