Bunk Beds

We have a wide range of bunk bed types of regular double bunks and three types of triple bunks! you can choose from ladder position on the end or the front and many of our designs include built in storage. Bunk beds are a popular choice for many Australian families particularly when a family does not have the luxury of giving each child their own room. Even if you have enough bedrooms for your children, often kids will like bunk beds also for the purpose of having an extra bed in their room for an occasional sleep over with a friend. However, when you do need to accommodate two or more kids in one room, a bunk bed will offer the best solution to free up some floor space in the bedroom for other uses such as study desk or play area.

Advantages and things to consider when buying a bunk bed

The standout advantage of a bunk bed is its vertical design. By stacking one bed on top of another, it puts the vertical space in the room to real use. Also, many bunk beds including many of our designs have built in storage cupboards and bookshelves, which further use bedroom space to maximum giving you a place to store not just clothes but also toys and books. While some kids will like sleeping on the bottom and others will like climbing up the ladder to get in to bed, in either case a bunk bed creates a private and separate space for each child in their own bed. From a safety perspective, it important to ensure that bunk beds are the right height, and age appropriate for your child. Changing sheets are always a challenge with the higher bunk beds. 

Types of bunk beds

Offset bunks or Aligned bunks

Bunk beds can be either designed with each bed directly stacked on top of each other or with the lower beds offset from the top bed. The offset might be at a right angle in a transverse arrangement or inline for a long wall design. The advantage of having the lower bed offset from the top bed so that it is only partially under the upper bed, has the advantage that it gives the person using the lower bed less of a closed space feeling. This gives a compromise solution as while it does take up a bit more space in the room, it makes the lower bed a little like a regular single bed.

Double Bunks 

Most bunks are of the double type that sleep two people. They are designed simply with one bed on top of another. In terms of choice of double bunks, there are either regular high bunks or low mini types. One point to remember with mini bunks is that with the upper bunk at a low height this gives often creates a clearance for the lower bed A parent may find out if their child will be able to sit up in bed, and it will be depending on the actual space height of the lower bunk, the mattress thickness, and the age of the child. 

Triple bunks

There are a few options to when it comes to triple bunks. A triple bunk can be three beds stacked on top of each other, or the beds with the middle bed only half overlapping the top and bottom bed. Another way to design a triple bunk is by simply adding a trundle under a regular double bunk or a single bed over a double sized bed. At Fitting Furniture, we don't make the first type where the three beds are directly on top of each other, but we do have two our Triple inline bunk and our Triple transverse bunk. We also make a double bunk with option trundle and our single over double triple bunk includes the option of a trundle as well making it a quadruple bunk!

What ages are appropriate for a bunk bed?

Older kids will use the upper elevated bed of the bunk bed and the younger child will use the lower bed. There is no set age as it will depend on the maturity and development of your child. When deciding on a bunk bed it's important to check the hight of the upper bunk, as bunks come in different heights. Mini lor low line bunks are more suited to when younger child will be using the upper bunk. Higher bunks such as our bunk bed with optional trundle, we offer it in two height options so you can order a bunk that is lower than a regular height bunk bed still higher than a mini bunk.

Can adults use bunk beds?

Adults can of course use bunk beds but our beds like most bunk beds are designed for children and teens so only a lightweight adults should use our bunk beds.
